The Kaeberlein Lab: Home of the Fightin' C. Elegans
|
My training as a scientist wouldn't be complete without lab experience. I began working in the lab of Matt Kaeberlein, an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology, as a Lab Helper the winter of my Freshman year. After spending a year making buffers and managing dish ware, I began working on research projects under the mentorship of the postdoc Scott Leiser.
Doing undergraduate research allows me to put when I learn in the classroom into practice. Not only do I get to practice the techniques that I learn in class, but I learn what it is like to work as a scientist. I get to have ownership of my part of the project, but it is through collaboration with my team that we answer questions. I get to practice speaking the language of science by presenting my data and reading research papers. Working in the Kaeberlein lab has been an extremely rewarding experience that has prepared me for both a future career and to be a literate citizen. |
