Strive for the Highest:
Kappa Kappa Psi - National Honorary Band Fraternity
Kappa Kappa Psi is a co-ed national honorary band fraternity dedicated to serving the bands at the University of Washington and promoting music in local schools and our community. We strive to promote music, service, and brotherhood in everything we do. You can find us teaching kids about musical instruments, encouraging students to continue with music in college and as a lifelong hobby, and serving at band concerts, functions, and events, such as the Pacific Northwest Band Festival and Husky Marching Band Junior/Senior Day at the Spring Football Game. We also pride ourselves in being a strong community and seek to foster meaningful friendships between musicians across campus and across the country. I joined the Gamma chapter at the University of Washington in the spring of 2012 my Freshman year, and it has been a wonderful way to give back to the musical community.
Kappa Kappa Psi's motto is "Strive for the Highest", and through the chapter I have had many unique opportunities to practice my leadership skills. I served as the chapter's Fundraising Chair for two years during my sophomore and junior years, during which I led a committee of about 8 people to raise money to support our chapter service projects and campus-wide social events. I organized card sale fundraisers with both Yogurtland and Jamba Juice, planned profit shares at local restaurants, experimented with the online app-testing program Donorsplay, and sold more logo T-shirts and sunglasses than I can keep track off. This position gave me insight into how to manage a budget and plan expenses, how to effectively communicate with a team and delegate projects, and how to set deadlines and stick with them. I am currently serving as our chapter Vice President, in charge of recruitment and new member education. During my time in the chapter I have found that I love being a mentor, and so I sought out this position to help shape the future of our chapter and to encourage our incoming members to reach their full potential. I love this position because I am a mentor to our younger members and can pass on my experiences to benefit our newest class. |
