Exploring the Power of Music was an exploration into how music affects us as people. Through academic readings and engaging speakers, we examined our own "personal music history", how people and even animals make music, and how people around the world respond to music and use it to improve their lives, from education to music healing. Our final project was to pick a topic we were interested in to research more deeply and present to the class. One of our very first assignments of the quarter was the watch the TED talk by percussionist Evelyn Glennie, who does not let being deaf prevent her from having a more profound connection to music than most hearing musicians ever achieve. For my final project I choose to research how people with hearing impairments interact with music, eventually presenting on the effectiveness of cochlear implants at allowing their users to hear music.
I loved this class because it allowed me to look at one of my deepest passions, music, through a different lens.
